Discover where a brand or product originates
Philadelphia, often colloquially referred to as 'Phil', is one of the world's most recognized cream cheese brands. Despite its name, the product did not originate in Philadelphia; it was actually invented in New York in 1872. The name was chosen by William Lawrence and a cheese distributor named Alvah Reynolds because Philadelphia was then known for high-quality dairy farming.
The brand has a complex ownership history linked to the evolution of Kraft Foods. Today, its ownership is split geographically. In North America (United States and Canada), the brand is owned and manufactured by Kraft Heinz. In most international markets, including Europe and Asia, the brand and its manufacturing rights are held by Mondelēz International. This division occurred following the spin-off of Kraft Foods Inc.'s global snacks business in 2012.
Manufacturing takes place in various regional hubs to ensure freshness. For the European market, production is largely centered in Germany (Fallingbostel), while North American supply comes from various plants across the United States. The brand remains the global leader in the cream cheese category, synonymous with versatile culinary applications from spreads to cheesecakes.
