Icelandic European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) shown here is the Icelandic version, known as the Evrópskt sjúkratryggingakort. It is a government-issued document that entitles the holder to state-provided healthcare during temporary stays in other European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland under the same conditions as people insured in that country.

In Iceland, these cards are managed and issued by Sjúkratryggingar Íslands (Icelandic Health Insurance), which is the governmental social security institution. The card follows a standardized European design format, featuring the holder's personal details and the 'IS' country code within the European flag stars, signifying its issuance in Iceland. While the physical plastic card might be printed by specialized secure printing contractors, the ultimate 'brand' and legal authority belong to the Icelandic state and the European Union's social security coordination framework.
