Rooh Afza

Rooh Afza is a legendary concentrated syrup known for its cooling properties and distinctive rose and herbal flavor profile. Originally formulated in 1906 in Old Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, it was designed as a medicinal drink to help residents of Delhi combat the harsh summer heat. The name 'Rooh Afza' translates to 'Refresher of the Soul,' reflecting its purpose as both a refreshing beverage and a health tonic based on Unani medicine principles.

Following the Partition of India in 1947, the brand underwent a unique split. One son of the founder stayed in India, while the other moved to Pakistan, leading to the establishment of separate entities. Today, the product is manufactured independently by Hamdard Laboratories (WAQF) in India and Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) in Pakistan. It is also produced in Bangladesh. Each entity operates as a charitable trust (Waqf), ensuring that profits are largely reinvested into healthcare and education initiatives.

Despite the geopolitical separation of its manufacturing hubs, the recipe remains largely consistent, featuring a complex blend of ingredients including rose, screw pine (kewra), coriander, orange, and various herbal extracts. The brand remains a cultural staple across South Asia and the Middle East, particularly during the month of Ramadan, and is globally recognized as one of the most iconic heritage brands from the Indian subcontinent.
