Tilda is a premier rice brand that has become synonymous with high-quality Basmati rice globally. The brand was founded in London, United Kingdom, in 1970 by the Thakrar family. Tilda was a pioneer in introducing premium Basmati rice to the Western market, specifically catering to the growing South Asian community in the UK before expanding to a wider audience. The brand is celebrated for its commitment to purity, ensuring that every grain of rice is DNA-tested to guarantee its authentic Basmati origin from the foothills of the Himalayas.
While the raw rice is sourced from the fertile plains of the Punjab region spanning India and Pakistan, the final processing, polishing, and packaging primarily take place at Tilda's state-of-the-art facility in Rainham, Essex, UK. This central processing hub allows the brand to maintain strict quality controls before distributing products worldwide.
In terms of ownership, the brand has transitioned from a family-owned business to part of a global conglomerate. In 2014, Tilda was acquired by the American natural foods company Hain Celestial. However, in 2019, it was sold to Ebro Foods, a Spanish multinational company that is a global leader in the rice sector. Today, Ebro Foods manages Tilda as a flagship premium brand within its extensive international portfolio, maintaining its headquarters and primary operations in Spain.
