OpenDNS Umbrella

OpenDNS is a pioneering provider of network security and Domain Name System (DNS) services, founded in 2006 by David Ulevitch. Originally launched to provide a faster and safer alternative to standard ISP-provided DNS servers, the brand quickly became a global leader in cloud-delivered security. The service works by routing web requests through its global network, filtering out malicious domains and providing an additional layer of protection for both home and enterprise users.

In 2015, Cisco Systems acquired OpenDNS for $635 million, integrating its technology into the Cisco security portfolio under the brand name Cisco Umbrella. This transition allowed the technology to scale significantly, leveraging Cisco's global infrastructure. Today, while the free consumer service still operates under the legacy OpenDNS name, the enterprise-grade solutions are fully managed as part of Cisco's expansive cybersecurity ecosystem, headquartered in San Jose, California.
