Founded in 1926 by Hans Kristjánsson, 66°North was originally created to provide protective clothing for Icelandic fishermen and search-and-rescue teams facing extreme North Atlantic conditions. The brand's heritage is deeply rooted in the harsh landscapes of Iceland, where functionality and durability are paramount. Over the decades, it has evolved into a global premium lifestyle and outdoor brand recognized for its technical performance and sustainable practices.

While the brand is deeply Icelandic in soul and design, its manufacturing occurs across several locations. Historically, much of the production took place in its own factories in Latvia, which the company has operated since the early 1990s. Today, 66°North utilizes a diversified supply chain across Europe and Asia to meet global demand while maintaining high standards of quality. In 2018, the brand underwent a significant ownership shift when American entrepreneur Keia Clarke and the investment group led by Sigurður Örn Hjaltason consolidated control, aiming to expand the brand's presence in international markets like London and Copenhagen.
