Ron Barceló is one of the most prestigious and recognizable rum brands globally, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Dominican Republic. The brand was founded in 1930 by Julian Barceló, a Spanish entrepreneur who moved to Santo Domingo with a vision to create the world's best rum. By utilizing the unique Caribbean climate and local sugar cane, the brand quickly established a reputation for high-quality, aged spirits.
Manufacturing takes place exclusively in the Dominican Republic, specifically at the distillery located in San Pedro de Macorís. The company is noted for its commitment to sustainability, being the first rum in the world to be certified Carbon Neutral. The production process follows strict regulations to carry the 'Dominican Rum' protected designation of origin, ensuring that the fermentation, distillation, and aging in oak barrels occur within the country.
While the brand started as a family-owned enterprise, its growth led to international partnerships. In the early 2000s, a group of Spanish entrepreneurs (primarily the owners of the MGEPE Group) acquired the majority of the brand, leading to the formation of Ron Barceló SRL. Today, the brand remains under Dominican and Spanish ownership interests, maintaining its status as a leading export and a symbol of Dominican craftsmanship on the global stage.
