Klene is one of the most iconic liquorice brands in the Netherlands, founded in 1876 by Johannes Coenradus Klene in Rotterdam. The brand is famous for its 'Muntdrop' (coin-shaped liquorice), which has been a staple in Dutch candy aisles for generations.

Originally a family-owned business, Klene underwent various ownership changes throughout the 20th century. In 1999, it was acquired by the Dutch confectionery giant Perfetti Van Melle. Today, Klene products are primarily manufactured in the Netherlands, specifically in factories located in Hoorn, ensuring the traditional Dutch recipes are preserved. Perfetti Van Melle, the ultimate owner, is a massive multinational corporation headquartered in both Italy and the Netherlands, managing some of the world's most recognizable candy brands.
