Du darfst is a well-known German food brand originally established in 1973 as a diet-focused brand catering to health-conscious consumers. The name translates to 'You may,' emphasizing a lifestyle of balance rather than restriction. The brand gained immense popularity in Germany for its range of butter alternatives, cold cuts, and ready-to-eat meals with reduced fat and calorie content.
Originally launched by Unilever, the brand underwent a significant ownership change in recent years. In 2018, as part of a strategic shift to divest its spreads business, Unilever sold the brand to KKR, which formed Upfield. Later, the specific German brand rights for Du darfst were acquired by the Dutch food group Signature Foods. Today, production is carried out across various facilities in Europe, primarily in Germany and the Netherlands, to serve the Central European market.
