Dole is one of the world's most recognizable fruit brands, with a history dating back to the late 19th century in Hawaii. Originally founded as the Hawaiian Pineapple Company by James Dole, the brand became synonymous with tropical produce, particularly canned pineapple and bananas. Over the decades, the company transformed the agricultural landscape of Hawaii and eventually expanded its sourcing to various tropical regions worldwide.
The manufacturing and sourcing of Dole pineapples have largely shifted from Hawaii to Southeast Asia to optimize climate conditions and labor efficiencies. The Philippines and Thailand serve as the primary hubs for their global pineapple production and canning operations. Despite its American origins, the brand has undergone significant corporate restructuring in the 21st century.
In 2021, the brand's primary fresh produce operations merged with Total Produce to form Dole plc, which is headquartered in Ireland. However, the packaged foods division (Dole Packaged Foods) is a separate entity owned by the Japanese conglomerate ITOCHU Corporation. This unique dual-ownership structure means that while the name is shared, the fresh and packaged products are managed by different international parent companies.
