Rapha was founded in London in 2004 by Simon Mottram with the goal of creating the finest cycling clothing and accessories in the world. The brand quickly became synonymous with a minimalist, high-performance aesthetic that redefined cycling fashion, moving away from the loud, sponsor-heavy jerseys of the professional peloton toward a more sophisticated and durable style.
While the brand's design and engineering headquarters remain in the United Kingdom, manufacturing is distributed globally to utilize specialized textile expertise. Much of the high-performance technical wear is produced in countries like Vietnam, China, and Romania, known for their advanced athletic garment production capabilities. The brand continues to focus on the 'Rapha Cycling Club' (RCC), a global community of cyclists that supports the brand's premium market position.
In 2017, the brand underwent a significant ownership change when it was acquired by RZC Investments, an investment firm founded by Steuart and Tom Walton, members of the family behind Walmart. This acquisition provided the capital necessary for international expansion and product diversification. Today, Rapha remains a dominant force in the luxury cycling market, combining heritage-inspired design with cutting-edge material science.
