Founded in 1920 in Riedlingen, Germany, the brand became famous for its innovative Silargan functional ceramic, which revolutionized the kitchenware market with its high durability and nickel-free properties. Historically, Silit operated as a distinct brand under the WMF Group.

Today, Silit is a sub-brand of the WMF Group, which was acquired in 2016 by the French conglomerate Groupe SEB. While some specialist products like those made with Silargan are still manufactured at the Riedlingen site in Germany to maintain high quality standards, other components or stainless steel lines may be sourced or manufactured in other international production sites within the Groupe SEB network.
