Hornimans is a historic tea brand with a heritage dating back to 1826 when it was founded by John Horniman in the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. Horniman was a pioneer in the tea industry, being the first to sell tea in sealed, lead-lined packages to ensure quality and prevent tampering. This innovation transformed tea from a luxury item sold loose into a reliable consumer brand.
While the brand originated in the UK, it found massive success and long-term residency in the Spanish market. In terms of manufacturing, Hornimans tea leaves are sourced from various global tea-growing regions, including Asia and Africa, and are blended and packaged in multiple locations to serve international markets, with a primary focus on Southern Europe.
Today, the brand is owned by JDE Peet's, a global coffee and tea powerhouse headquartered in the Netherlands. JDE Peet's was formed following the merger of Jacobs Douwe Egberts and Peet's Coffee. The ownership of Hornimans transitioned through several major conglomerates over the decades—including Douwe Egberts and Sara Lee—before becoming part of the current JDE Peet's portfolio, where it remains a leading brand in the tea category.
