NAD, originally an abbreviation for New Acoustic Dimension, was founded in London, United Kingdom, in 1972. The brand was established by a group of audio industry veterans led by Marty Borish, with the specific goal of creating high-quality audio components that prioritized performance over unnecessary aesthetic features. Their philosophy focused on 'Music First', leading to the creation of legendary products like the NAD 3020 amplifier, which remains one of the best-selling hi-fi components in history.
While the brand's engineering spirit remains rooted in its European heritage, its business operations have shifted internationally over the decades. In 1999, NAD was acquired by the Lenbrook Group, a Canadian company based in Ontario. Today, the design and engineering work is largely conducted in Canada, while actual manufacturing is primarily outsourced to specialized electronics facilities in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs to ensure competitive pricing while maintaining high technical standards.
As of the mid-2020s, NAD Electronics continues to operate as a core brand under the Lenbrook Group’s portfolio, alongside other premium audio brands like PSB Speakers and Bluesound. This ownership provides NAD with access to advanced digital streaming technologies and multi-room audio ecosystems, ensuring the brand remains a leader in the modern audiophile market.
