Plymouth Gin is a historic spirit with a rich heritage that dates back to 1793. It is uniquely tied to the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, England, which is the oldest working distillery in the country. For decades, it held a 'Protected Geographical Indication' status, meaning it could only be produced within the city of Plymouth, a distinction that helped define its slightly sweeter and earthier profile compared to standard London Dry Gins. While that legal designation has since lapsed, production remains firmly rooted in its original home.
Throughout the 20th century, Plymouth Gin became a staple of cocktail culture, notably mentioned in the first recorded dry martini recipe. The brand's identity is closely linked to maritime history, as it was a favorite among the British Royal Navy. Over the years, ownership transitioned through various global spirits firms as the industry consolidated, eventually becoming a centerpiece in the premium portfolio of a major international conglomerate.
Today, the brand is owned by the French spirits giant Pernod Ricard. While it is distributed globally to bars and retailers, every bottle continues to be crafted at the Black Friars Distillery using the same blend of seven botanicals and soft Dartmoor water. This commitment to its geographic origin ensures that the brand maintains the heritage and quality standards established over two centuries ago.
