Tungsram is a historic lighting brand with deep roots in Hungary. Founded in 1896, it became a pioneer in the light bulb industry, notably for its early use of tungsten filaments. For several decades, it was a subsidiary of the American conglomerate General Electric (GE Lighting). However, in 2018, GE sold its lighting business in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey to Tungsram Group, led by Joerg Bauer.
In recent years, the company faced significant financial challenges, leading to bankruptcy proceedings starting in 2022. As of 2023 and looking toward the future, the Tungsram brand name and operations have undergone restructuring and acquisition of assets by various entities including the Hungarian government's initiatives to preserve industrial value, though the primary manufacturing heritage remains centered in Hungary. Distribution continues through various electrical wholesalers and local partners.
