Augustiner-Bräu is Munich's oldest independent brewery, with roots dating back to a monastery established in 1328. The brewery is famous for its preservation of traditional brewing methods, including the use of wooden barrels for storage and the sourcing of water from its own private well. Its most popular product, Edelstoff, is a world-renowned Helles Lager known for its crispness and purity.
While many historic breweries have been acquired by multinational beverage conglomerates, Augustiner-Bräu remains fiercely independent. It is owned by the Edith-Haberland-Wagner Foundation, which holds a majority stake and ensures that the profits are used for charitable purposes and the preservation of Munich's brewing heritage. The beer is brewed exclusively in Munich, adhering strictly to the Reinheitsgebot (Bavarian Purity Law).
