The Automobile Association (AA)

The Automobile Association, commonly known as the AA, was founded in 1905 in the United Kingdom by a group of motoring enthusiasts. Originally established to help motorists avoid police speed traps, the organization evolved into the UK's leading provider of breakdown assistance and insurance services. Over the decades, it expanded its portfolio to include driving lessons, financial services, and travel reports, becoming an iconic British institution.

In terms of ownership, the AA has undergone several transitions. It was a mutual club until it was demutualized in 1999 and sold to Centrica. In 2004, it was acquired by private equity firms CVC and Permira, who later merged it with Saga to form Acromas Holdings. Following its 2014 listing on the London Stock Exchange, the company eventually returned to private ownership. In early 2021, the AA was acquired by a consortium comprising TowerBrook Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus, ensuring its stabilization and continued operation as a major service provider in the UK and Ireland.
