Founded in 1909 by Hans Westphal in Lübeck, the brand has been a staple in German households for over a century. The manufacturing primarily takes place in Germany, particularly at specialized facilities in Sassnitz and Lübeck, as indicated by the veterinary monitoring codes on the packaging.

Today, the brand is part of the Rügen Fisch Group, which is the market leader for canned fish in Germany. In a significant acquisition in 2016, the Thai Union Group, a global leader in the seafood industry based in Thailand, acquired a majority stake in Rügen Fisch. This means that while Hawesta remains a brand with deep German heritage and local production, it is ultimately owned by a global seafood conglomerate.
