Cinesa is the leading cinema exhibition company in Spain, founded in 1944. Originally established in Barcelona by Alfredo Matas and José Arquer, the brand became a household name for film entertainment across the Iberian Peninsula. Over the decades, Cinesa has been a pioneer in introducing technological advancements to the Spanish market, such as IMAX and premium large formats.
In 2016, the brand underwent a significant ownership change when its then-owner, the Terra Firma Capital Partners group, sold Odeon & UCI Cinemas Group to AMC Theatres. Consequently, Cinesa became a subsidiary of AMC Theatres, the largest movie exhibition company in the world. While the service is provided and operated within Spain, the ultimate strategic management and ownership reside with the American conglomerate AMC, which is headquartered in Leawood, Kansas.
