Launched in 1990 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the beer is named after the iconic Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft. It is a traditional English ale brewed using 100% Kentish ingredients, including locally grown hops and mineral water from the brewery's own artesian well.

The brand is owned and managed by Shepherd Neame Ltd, an independent family-owned brewery. Unlike many historic British beer brands that have been acquired by multinational conglomerates, Shepherd Neame remains publicly listed on the Aquis Stock Exchange but maintains strong family control through the Neame family. The production is centralized at their historic brewery in Kent, ensuring the product maintains its 'Kentish Ale' Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status.
