Founded by Dennis Crowley in Worcester, Massachusetts, it began as a whiskey business before pivoting to carbonated beverages during the Prohibition era. Today, Polar Tonic Water remains a staple in the brand's extensive portfolio of mixers and seltzers, known for its carbonation quality and long-standing presence in the New England area.

The brand is still privately owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generations of the Crowley family. While they have expanded significantly through strategic bottling and distribution agreements—most notably with Keurig Dr Pepper—they maintain their independence as the largest independent soft-drink bottler in the United States. Manufacturing is primarily concentrated in the Northeast United States, with facilities in Massachusetts and Georgia ensuring regional supply chains.
