Monsanto was a prominent American agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation. Originally founded in 1901 in St. Louis, Missouri, the company transitioned from a chemical manufacturer into a leader in genetically modified crops and herbicides, most notably Roundup.
In 2018, Monsanto was acquired by the German pharmaceutical and life sciences giant Bayer AG. Following the acquisition, Bayer retired the Monsanto brand name to address public perception issues, though the products and technologies, such as Dekalb seeds and Roundup, continue to be produced under Bayer's Crop Science division. Manufacturing occurs globally, with major facilities located in the United States, Brazil, and across Europe.
