Freistädter Märzen is a traditional Austrian beer produced by the Braucommune in Freistadt, located in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. The brewery is unique because it operates as a 'commune' – a legal structure dating back to 1777 where the brewing rights are tied to 149 specific properties in the historic city center of Freistadt.
All Freistädter beers are brewed strictly in accordance with local traditions using regional raw materials, including water from their own deep wells and hops from the Mühlviertel district. This ensures that the production remains localized to its historic origin point.
Today, the Braucommune in Freistadt remains one of the largest independent breweries in Upper Austria. It is not owned by any major international beverage conglomerate, making it a rare example of a community-owned historic enterprise that has maintained its autonomy and local character for centuries.
