Outdoor Research, often abbreviated as OR, is a premier American brand specializing in technical apparel and gear for outdoor enthusiasts. Founded in 1981 by physicist and climber Ron Gregg, the brand originated in Seattle, Washington, following Gregg's commitment to improving outdoor safety and functionality after a climbing incident. The company gained fame for its innovative designs, starting with the X-Gaiter and expanding into a full line of gloves, hats, and technical outerwear.
While the brand maintains a significant commitment to domestic manufacturing through its 'Made in USA' tactical and Berry Compliant lines produced in Seattle and California, the majority of its consumer outdoor products are manufactured through high-quality partners in Asia, specifically Vietnam and Cambodia. This global supply chain allows the brand to scale its technical innovations while maintaining high performance standards for alpinism, skiing, and hiking.
In 2003, following the passing of Ron Gregg, the company was acquired by Dan Nordstrom. Since 2021, Outdoor Research has been owned by Youngone Corporation, a major global manufacturer of outdoor and athletic clothing based in South Korea. Under this ownership, the brand continues to operate from its headquarters in Seattle, leveraging Youngone's extensive manufacturing capabilities to expand its global footprint while remaining true to its heritage of functional, research-driven design.
