SheaMoisture is a personal care brand that focuses on hair and body products. It was founded in 1991 in Harlem, New York, by Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis, who were inspired by Dennis's grandmother, Sophie Tucker, a widow who sold shea butter and handcrafted hair and skin preparations in Sierra Leone in 1912.
In 2017, the brand's parent company, Sundial Brands, was acquired by the consumer goods giant Unilever. Today, while the products are marketed globally and distributed through various subsidiaries, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Unilever, a British multinational company. Most products are manufactured in the United States, utilizing sourced ingredients like shea butter from women's cooperatives in Africa.
