Stauning Whisky is a pioneer in the Nordic spirits market, founded in 2005 by nine friends with diverse professional backgrounds—including a doctor, a butcher, and teachers. Based in Skjern on the West Coast of Denmark, the distillery was established with the ambition of creating a world-class whisky using locally sourced ingredients and traditional methods.
Every bottle of Stauning is produced using floor-malting, a traditional technique where the grain is spread across a floor and turned by hand to germinate. The distillery utilizes 100% locally grown Danish rye and barley, often peated with local peat and heather. This commitment to local terroir gives the spirits their distinct Nordic character, ranging from smoky profiles to spicy rye variations.
In 2015, the brand received a significant investment from Distill Ventures, a business accelerator funded by Diageo. This partnership allowed Stauning to build a state-of-the-art distillery in Skjern, significantly increasing production capacity while maintaining artisanal standards. As of 2024 and looking toward 2026, Diageo holds a majority ownership stake in the company, integrating this Danish craft gem into its global portfolio of premium spirits.
