Garoto was founded in 1929 by German immigrant Heinrich Meyerfreund in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Originally starting as a candy factory named 'H. Meyerfreund & Cia', it quickly became one of the most iconic confectionery brands in Latin America, particularly famous for its 'Caixa Amarela' (Yellow Box) of assorted chocolates and the 'Serenata de Amor' bonbon.
In 2002, the brand was acquired by the Swiss multinational Nestlé. Although the acquisition faced long-standing regulatory scrutiny from Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), it was finally and fully ratified in 2023. Today, Garoto remains a major consumer name, with its primary manufacturing hub located in its original home of Vila Velha, Brazil, where it operates one of the largest chocolate factories in the southern hemisphere.
While rooted in Brazilian culture, Garoto's products are exported to over 50 countries, leveraging Nestlé's global distribution network to reach markets in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Americas. Despite being part of a global conglomerate, the brand maintains its distinct Brazilian identity and recipe profiles.
