Spar is an international retail chain and brand that operates under a unique voluntary cooperative model. Originally founded in the Netherlands in 1932 by Adriaan van Well, the brand was built on the principle of independent wholesalers and retailers working together to achieve scale. Today, it is one of the world's largest food retail chains.

While the brand originated in the Netherlands, Spar products are manufactured in a vast array of countries depending on the local regional partner. In each country where Spar operates, the local organization typically sources products from domestic manufacturers to stock their private label range, ensuring that the supply chain remains localized and efficient.

The global coordination of the brand is managed by SPAR International, headquartered in Amsterdam. However, the business is decentralized; each national Spar organization is independently owned and operated. This means that while the branding is global, the ownership of the retail outlets and the distribution of private label products are handled by local licensed partners in over 48 countries across four continents.
