Origin and Concept

MX Linux is a midweight desktop operating system that first appeared in 2014. It was born from a collaborative venture between the former MEPIS community and the antiX Linux community. The OS is designed to be elegant and efficient, offering high stability while remaining easy to use for both beginners and advanced users. It is based on the Debian Stable branch and uses XFCE as its flagship desktop environment.

Development and Manufacturing

Unlike physical consumer goods, MX Linux is a digital product developed through open-source collaboration. The development is primarily managed by the MX Dev Team, which consists of volunteers located in various countries. While it has roots in Greek and American developer communities, the infrastructure and code contributions come from a global network of mirror servers and contributors.

Ownership and Governance

MX Linux is not owned by a private corporation or a single billionaire; rather, it is a community-driven project. It is governed by the MX Linux community and maintains its independence from large corporate entities. The project is funded through donations and a partnership with specialized laptop vendors like Star Labs or Tuxedo Computers, which offer pre-installed versions of the OS. The ultimate control of the software remains with the non-incorporated MX Dev Team and the wider community involved in its democratic development process.
