Maredsous cheese traces its origins back to the Maredsous Abbey in Denée, Belgium, which was founded in 1872. While the cheese was originally handcrafted by monks at the monastery to support their community, the production was eventually commercialized and professionalized to meet broader demand. Today, it remains an iconic Belgian brand known for its traditional ripening processes and creamy textures.
Since 1990, the production and brand management of Maredsous cheese have been under the stewardship of the Bel Group. While the cheese is manufactured in specialized facilities in Belgium to maintain its authentic Belgian character, the ultimate ownership lies with the French multinational Bel Group. This partnership ensures that the heritage of the Maredsous monks is preserved while utilizing modern distribution networks to reach fans of gourmet dairy products worldwide.
