BlackBerry is a brand of smartphones, tablets, and services originally designed and marketed by the Canadian company BlackBerry Limited (formerly known as Research In Motion, or RIM). Known for its iconic physical QWERTY keyboard and highly secure software, BlackBerry was a dominant force in the mobile industry during the early 21st century, particularly among corporate and government users.
While BlackBerry Limited originally manufactured these devices in Canada and later through global partners in Mexico and Asia, the company transitioned away from hardware in 2016 to focus on enterprise software and cybersecurity. The brand name was subsequently licensed to several manufacturers, including TCL Communication and OnwardMobility, though hardware production has largely ceased as of the early 2020s.
Today, BlackBerry Limited remains a Canadian-based company, but focuses its efforts on secure software solutions for the automotive, industrial, and government sectors rather than consumer hardware development.
