Honor was launched in 2013 as a sub-brand of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. It was originally established to focus on the online-first market and younger consumer demographics, offering high-specification devices at competitive price points. For several years, it operated as a key asset within Huawei's consumer business group, leveraging its parent company's vast research and development resources.
In November 2020, due to severe pressure from international trade restrictions placed on Huawei, the brand was sold to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co., Ltd. This consortium was formed by over 30 agents and dealers of the Honor brand, alongside the Shenzhen Smart City Technology Development Group (a state-owned enterprise). This strategic divestment was intended to ensure the brand's survival by allowing it to regain access to critical global supply chains, including Google Mobile Services and chipset providers like Qualcomm.
Today, Honor operates as an independent global entity headquartered in Shenzhen, China. It maintains its own manufacturing facilities and R&D centers while expanding its product portfolio beyond smartphones into tablets, laptops, and wearable technology. The ownership structure remains a cooperative of Chinese investors and state-linked entities, positioning the brand as a major independent player in the global technology market.
