Solgar was founded in 1947 by Nat Colby, Mike Goldfarb, and Carl Zoll in New Jersey, USA. The brand quickly established a reputation for high-quality, science-based nutritional supplements, often recognized by its iconic amber glass jars and gold labels.

Solgar manufactures its products in its own state-of-the-art facility in Leonia, New Jersey. This facility allows the company to maintain rigorous quality control standards, including its own USP-grade water purification system and air filtration systems.

In 2005, Solgar was acquired by NBTY (Nature's Bounty Co.), which was later purchased by the private equity firm KKR. In 2021, Nestlé Health Science reached an agreement to acquire the majority of Nature's Bounty's brands, including Solgar. As of 2024 and beyond, Solgar is a flagship brand within the Nestlé Health Science portfolio, operating as part of the Swiss multinational's nutrition and wellness division.
