Osram is a historically significant German lighting brand founded in 1919 through the merger of the lighting businesses of Auergesellschaft, Siemens & Halske, and Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG). The name is derived from 'osmium' and 'wolfram' (tungsten), both elements used for filaments. Over the decades, Osram became a global leader in lighting technology.
Following a series of corporate restructurings, the consumer general lighting division was spun off into a separate company called LEDVANCE in 2016. In 2017, LEDVANCE was acquired by a Chinese consortium, and as of 2024, it is a subsidiary of MLS Co., Ltd., a major Chinese lighting manufacturer. While the brand retains its German engineering heritage and deep roots in Munich, the ultimate ownership is Chinese, and production is distributed across various global facilities, particularly in China and Eastern Europe.
