The company was founded in 1982 by Giuseppe Braida in Govone, Italy, and has since grown into a global leader in the production of private-label spreads and semi-finished products for the chocolate industry.

Historically rooted in the Piedmont region of Italy, a famous hub for hazelnut cultivation, Nutkao maintains its primary manufacturing facilities locally. Although the brand remains closely tied to its Italian heritage, the corporate ownership transitioned in recent years. As of 2024, the company was acquired by TCH (TowerBrook Capital Partners) through an investment vehicle, aiming to expand its international presence further into the late 2020s and beyond.
