Wostok is a unique soft drink brand that bridges historical Soviet beverage culture with modern German organic standards. The brand was founded in Berlin in 2008 by Joris van Velzen, a Dutch photographer who spent years in Moscow. Inspired by a pine-needle flavored soda from the 1970s called Baikal, he reimagined the recipe for the Western market.
While the soul of the brand is rooted in Soviet nostalgia, the production is strictly German. The beverages are manufactured using organic-certified ingredients and are bottled in Germany. The brand has expanded from its original pine-needle flavor to include various fruit and botanical combinations, all maintaining an 'ostalgic' yet contemporary aesthetic.
Today, Wostok is owned and managed by the Berlin-based company Baikal Getränke GmbH. It remains an independent brand within the German craft soda scene, known for its distinctive flavors and organic credentials, serving a niche market that appreciates historical depth combined with high-quality production.
