Motorola Telecommunications and Electronics

Motorola is one of the most iconic names in the history of telecommunications, originally founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1928 as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. The brand gained global fame for inventing many of the technologies that defined the 20th century, including the first handheld mobile phone and the equipment used to broadcast the first moon landing. In 2011, the company split into two independent entities: Motorola Mobility, which focuses on consumer devices like smartphones, and Motorola Solutions, which focuses on public safety and enterprise security products.

Today, the ownership of the Motorola brand for consumer products is held by Lenovo, a Chinese multinational technology giant that acquired Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014. Despite the change in ownership, the design and engineering offices remain partially headquartered in Chicago. Manufacturing of Motorola smartphones and consumer electronics primarily takes place in China, India, and Brazil to serve global markets.

Motorola Solutions, the other half of the original legacy company, remains a separate American-owned entity headquartered in Chicago. It focuses exclusively on professional radio systems, body cameras, and software for law enforcement and emergency services. This dual-branded presence means the 'Motorola' name represents two distinct global leaders in different sectors of technology.
