Founded in 1941 by Enrique Coppel Tamayo in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Coppel has grown from a small gift shop named 'El Regalo' into one of the largest departmental retailers in Mexico. The brand is well-known for offering accessible credit to its customers, a strategy that fueled its rapid expansion throughout the country.

While the company is a retail service provider rather than a manufacturer of a single product, the goods sold under its private labels are primarily manufactured in Mexico and Asia. The brand remains deeply rooted in its Mexican heritage, maintaining its headquarters in Culiacán. It has also expanded internationally with operations in Argentina.

Today, Coppel is owned and managed by the Coppel family through Grupo Coppel. It operates as a diversified conglomerate that includes BanCoppel and Afore Coppel, integrating retail and banking services into a single ecosystem designed for the middle- and lower-income demographics in the regions it serves.
