Sumikko Gurashi is a popular Japanese character brand created by the designer Yuri Yokomizo in 2012. The name roughly translates to "Life in the Corner," reflecting the Japanese cultural preference for corner seats and a sense of comfort found in quiet, secluded spaces. The character shown in the image is Neko, a timid and socially anxious calico cat who often retreats to corners for security.
The brand was developed and is managed by San-X, a major Japanese stationery and character company headquartered in Tokyo. While many high-quality collectible items and stationery for the Japanese domestic market are manufactured locally in Japan, many accessory products like stickers and plushies are also produced in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs to meet global demand.
As of 2024 and beyond, San-X remains a privately held independent company in Japan. They manage Sumikko Gurashi alongside other iconic global brands like Rilakkuma. In international markets, the brand is distributed through various official character stores and licensed vendors, maintaining its status as a staple of Japanese 'kawaii' culture.
