Marantz is a legendary name in the high-fidelity audio industry, tracing its roots back to 1953 when Saul Marantz founded the Marantz Company in New York. The brand quickly became synonymous with premium sound quality, beginning with the 'Audio Consolette' pre-amplifier. Over the decades, the brand's engineering excellence moved its center of gravity toward Japan, particularly after the establishment of Marantz Japan and its long-standing manufacturing hub, the Shirakawa Audio Works.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major corporations. After being part of Philips in the 1980s and later merging with Denon to form D&M Holdings, it was eventually acquired by Sound United. In a major industry shift finalized in late 2025, the brand was acquired by Harman International, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. This move has integrated Marantz into one of the world's largest audio portfolios alongside brands like JBL and AKG. While high-end 'Premium' and 'Reference' components are still handcrafted at the Shirakawa facility in Japan to maintain the brand's 'Most Musical Sound' legacy, mainstream models like the NR1200 are typically manufactured in specialized facilities in Vietnam.
