VanEck is a prominent global investment management firm that specializes in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds, and institutional accounts. Founded in 1955, the firm established itself by offering American investors access to international growth stocks during the post-World War II recovery. It later became a pioneer in hard asset investing, launching one of the first gold equity funds in 1968. In 2006, the firm successfully entered the ETF market with the launch of the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), which remains one of its flagship products.

While the company is headquartered in New York City, its financial 'manufacturing'—the registration and domiciling of its fund products—takes place in several key financial hubs. U.S.-based funds are typically registered in the United States, while products aimed at European and international investors often utilize UCITS structures domiciled in countries like Ireland or the Netherlands (through VanEck ETFs N.V.). This global operational footprint allows the firm to cater to diverse regulatory environments across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Ownership of VanEck has remained within the founding family for its entire history. Following the passing of co-founder Derek van Eck in 2010, the firm has been led by his brother, Jan van Eck, who serves as CEO. As a privately held, family-owned corporation, VanEck maintains a focus on long-term investment strategies and thematic innovation, including recent expansions into digital assets and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.
