Patum Peperium Gentleman's Relish

Gentleman's Relish, officially known by its mock-Latin name Patum Peperium (meaning 'pepper paste'), is a historic British savoury condiment. It was invented in 1828 by John Osborn, an Englishman living in Paris, who later brought the product to England. The relish is traditionally made from a secret blend of salted anchovies, butter, and a complex array of herbs and spices including mace and cayenne. For generations, it has been a staple of British culinary culture, famously served thinly scraped onto hot buttered toast or used to enhance dishes like shepherd's pie.

While originally produced in Paris and later for decades in the United Kingdom (notably in Elsenham, Hertfordshire), production was moved to Poland in 2017. In early 2026, the brand's long-term owner, AB World Foods (a subsidiary of Associated British Foods), announced it would discontinue the product due to dwindling commercial appeal. However, due to its cult following and historical significance, there have been ongoing negotiations regarding the sale of the brand to third parties to ensure its survival beyond 2026.
