Clif Bar energy bar

Clif Bar is an iconic American energy food brand founded in 1992 by Gary Erickson, who was inspired during a long-distance bike ride to create a better-tasting energy bar. The brand was originally established under the company name Kali's SportNaturals, which later became Clif Bar & Company. For decades, it remained a privately held, family-owned and employee-owned enterprise, famously turning down a $120 million acquisition offer from Quaker Oats in 2000 to maintain its independence and commitment to sustainability.

In 2022, Clif Bar & Company was acquired by the global snacking giant Mondelēz International for approximately $2.9 billion. Under Mondelēz's ownership, the brand has continued to expand its reach while maintaining its headquarters in Emeryville, California. Manufacturing is primarily centralized in the United States, with major dedicated bakeries located in Twin Falls, Idaho, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Some select product lines are also produced in Canada to serve the North American market.
