North Sails was founded in 1957 by Lowell North in San Diego, California. Originally established as a high-performance sailmaker using engineering principles to revolutionize the sport of sailing, the brand expanded into apparel in 1987-1989. This lifestyle division was heavily influenced by Italian design through a long-standing partnership with the Italian company Tomasoni Topsail.
Today, North Sails is a global leader in both sailmaking and marine-inspired fashion. While the sailmaking division has massive production facilities in Sri Lanka and other locations like Nevada, the apparel line is managed through North Sails Apparel S.p.A. (a Società Benefit/B Corp) based in Italy. Manufacturing for clothing and accessories such as this cap occurs in multiple countries including Bangladesh, China, and Italy, depending on the specific product line. Since 2014, the brand has been under the ultimate ownership of Oakley Capital, a private equity firm that consolidated the global sailmaking and apparel businesses under the North Technology Group.
