Sparta is a venerable Dutch brand with a history dating back to 1917, when it was founded in Apeldoorn as a wholesaler by A. Verbeek, D.L. Schakel, and L. Krijgsman. Over the decades, the company evolved from producing traditional bicycles to becoming a dominant manufacturer of motorcycles and mopeds in the mid-20th century. Today, Sparta is recognized as a pioneer and market leader in the electric bicycle (e-bike) sector, having introduced the revolutionary ION series in the early 2000s.
While the brand's heart and engineering heritage remain in the Netherlands, its manufacturing footprint has expanded globally. Historically, production was centralized in Apeldoorn; however, as part of its parent company's broader industrial strategy, volume manufacturing has increasingly shifted to specialized regional hubs, including modern facilities in Hungary.
Since 1999, Sparta has been a core member of the Accell Group. As of 2026, the brand's ownership structure has undergone a significant transformation following a debt restructuring where the investment firm KKR exited its majority position. The brand is now controlled by a consortium of 'super senior lenders' who have assumed ownership to stabilize and grow the portfolio, ensuring Sparta continues to lead the national transition toward sustainable and innovative urban mobility.
