German Doner Kebab, commonly known as GDK, is a prominent fast-casual restaurant chain that traces its heritage back to a restaurant in Berlin, Germany, established in 1989. The brand's official franchise model was launched in Dubai in 2013 by Farshad Abbaszadeh and his wife, Leila Zomorrodian. Since then, it has transformed into a global phenomenon, focusing on a premium 'gourmet' approach to traditional kebabs. In 2017, the brand was acquired by the Sarwar family through their company, Hero Brands, which subsequently moved the global headquarters to Glasgow, Scotland.
While the recipes and brand identity are rooted in German and Middle Eastern influences, the products are manufactured and prepared locally within each market where the chain operates, including the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, and the UAE. In May 2025, Hero Brands secured a strategic investment from the private equity firm True, aimed at accelerating GDK's international growth and modernizing its brand positioning for a Gen-Z audience. The brand is known for its signature waffle-toasted bread, lean meats, and proprietary sauces, distinguishing it from traditional late-night kebab shops.
