Cillit Bang household cleaner

Cillit (and its widely known extension Cillit Bang) is a prominent brand in the household cleaning sector, specializing in limescale and grime removal. The brand's history is split into two distinct paths: its origins in German water technology and its later evolution into a global consumer cleaning powerhouse.

The original Cillit brand was founded in 1903 by Ernst and Cilly Vogelmann in Germany as a water treatment company. In 1982, the consumer division of the brand was acquired by Benckiser (which later merged with Reckitt & Colman to form Reckitt Benckiser). While the industrial water technology division eventually split off to become BWT (Best Water Technology), the consumer cleaning brand was transformed and launched internationally as 'Cillit Bang' in 2003, starting in Hungary before reaching the UK and the rest of the world.

In a major corporate shift in 2025, the parent company Reckitt (formerly Reckitt Benckiser) reached an agreement to sell a 70% majority stake in its 'Essential Home' business—which includes Cillit Bang—to the private equity firm Advent International. Reckitt retains a 30% minority interest. Manufacturing for Cillit products is distributed across multiple global sites, with significant production facilities located in Poland and other regional hubs to serve international markets.
