Sugar snap peas

Sugar snap peas, scientifically known as Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon, are a modern vegetable hybrid created to be eaten pod and all. While peas have been a staple since ancient times, the specific 'Sugar Snap' variety was developed by plant breeder Dr. Calvin Lamborn in Twin Falls, Idaho. He successfully crossed a shelling pea mutant with a snow pea to create the thick-walled, sweet, and crunchy pod we recognize today. The variety was officially released in 1979 by the Gallatin Valley Seed Company and won the All-America Selections gold medal that same year.

Today, sugar snap peas are a global commodity produced in numerous countries to ensure year-round availability. Major commercial producers include China, India, Guatemala, Peru, Kenya, and the United States. In North America and Europe, they are often grown locally during the summer months but imported from warmer climates like Mexico, Egypt, and Zimbabwe during the winter. Because the 'Sugar Snap' name refers to the specific cultivar developed by Lamborn, many seed companies and agricultural firms now produce various sub-varieties such as 'Sugar Ann' or 'Super Sugar Snap'.
