Président is a flagship French dairy brand, widely recognized as a leader in the global cheese and butter market. The brand's history began in 1933 when André Besnier founded a small dairy in Laval, France. However, the Président brand itself was officially launched in 1968 by his son, Michel Besnier, who revolutionized the industry by introducing the first high-quality pasteurized Camembert. The brand's identity is deeply rooted in French culture, with the name 'Président' chosen to represent prestige and the common French saying that 'everyone is a president' in their own circle.
While the brand maintains its artisanal heritage, it is now part of Groupe Lactalis, one of the largest dairy companies in the world. Lactalis remains a family-owned business, headquartered in Laval, Mayenne, France. While much of the production, particularly for traditional French cheeses, remains in France (with the Franche-Comté region being a key site for processed varieties), Lactalis operates numerous production facilities across Europe, the Middle East, and Australia to meet global demand.
